  • Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. You and the people with you will wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to perform it alone.
                                                                       - Exodus 18:17-18
    • Why Lay Leadership?

In Exodus Chapter 18, Jethro, Moses's father-in-law sees the work that Moses is doing for the people of Israel. He sees that Moses is single-handedly bestowing upon them great blessings, providing them wise counsel, and helping them come to know the statutes of God. He observes Moses serving the people of Israel in astounding and beautiful ways.

Yet Jethro also sees danger in this, he sees that Moses will not only wear himself out, but he will wear his people out. He tells Moses, "This thing is too heavy for you...I will give you counsel...chose able men from all the people, such as fear God, men who are trustworthy and who hate a bribe...let them judge the people at all times; every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves; so it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you. If you do this, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people also will go to their place in peace.” (Ex 18:19-23)

Brothers and Sisters, we at the Office of Parish Support are convicted that one of the essential keys to thriving parishes is active and dedicated lay leadership. Our pastors can not bear the burden of leading the people of God on their own, they don't deserve that, they deserve your support. We are here to help your parish establish leadership teams to assist your pastor in the mission our Lord has given us by our baptism (CCC 1213), the mission of making disciples.

    • How can my liaison help

While not limited to this, your liaison can help in at least four distinct ways.

Firstly, if you are struggling to find leaders to support the parish, your liaison can help you with a process by which to find and recruit new people to help with leadership in your parish

Secondly, if your leadership team is struggling to come up with a plan to make disciples of all nations in your parish boundaries, your liaison can help your team discern what God is calling you to focus on in the mission of making disciples in your community.

Thirdly, if your leadership team meetings seem like the same thing happens at every meeting and nothing seems to translate into action, your liaison can help you structure your meetings so they are effective and productive.

Finally, if you are looking for resources and guidance on good ministry practices, your liaison can point you in the right direction.
